The special cacao variety: Arhuaco

It comes from the indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada, the Arhuaco Indians. This extraordinary cacao variety carries a certain magic that I'd love to tell you more about.

The Arhuaco live in northern Colombia, in an area bordering Panama. The Arhuaco have their home in this tropical rainforest, which runs from the mountains to the sea. They are deeply connected to their spirituality and a worldview that is very different from ours. The Arhuaco see themselves as having the role of uniting the two poles – the feminine and the masculine, the sea and the mountains. The mountains symbolize the masculine, and the sea symbolizes the feminine.

Until recently, the Arhuaco were unable to access the sea because their land had been taken from them since the colonial era. They retreated to the mountains, chewed coca, ate potatoes, and waited to resume their original task. Less than 15 years ago, a private buyer enabled the return of the land to the Arhuaco, allowing them to work with the land again. This also includes cacao cultivation.

Arhuaco: Symbol of a New Beginning

Our Arhuaco cacao is not just a commodity or a brand; it symbolizes the renewed cultivation of their culture and the return to their land, which they missed for over 400 years. It is a great gift to be able to share this cacao with you. The Arhuaco wear white hats and natural fiber clothing, chew coca leaves, and are at peace with themselves. Their sublime culture deeply impresses me.

On-site visit: Sierra Nevada in Colombia

During our on-site visit, we experienced the authenticity of this tribe. An interview with one of the tribal leaders, Rochel, made me realize once again that the reality we live in is just one of many. Through the Arhuaco's cacao and their way of life, we experience a wisdom of unity and the merging of poles. This is the effect I perceive with this cacao – an incredibly powerful, potent cacao that I only drink on special occasions.
