Packaging Journal: "Lebensmittelechte Kartonverpackung für Kakao"

"Karl Knauer is developing an eco-friendly cardboard packaging made from cocoa shells for Kakao Mischa. The packaging combines sustainability with an exclusive design and dispenses with the standard PE coating."

Packaging specialist Karl Knauer has developed an innovative packaging solution for the high-quality cocoa products from Kakao Mischa. The new packaging, which consists of the eco-friendly "Crush Cacao" cardboard material, contains up to 15% cocoa shells, a by-product of chocolate production.

Kakao Mischa, known for its high-quality cocoa varieties used for purposes such as cocoa ceremonies, places great importance on sustainability and fairness in all aspects of production. This is also reflected in the new packaging developed by Karl Knauer. "Crush Cacao" is an eco-friendly cardboard that incorporates cocoa shells, a waste product from chocolate production. This sustainable solution is rounded off with silver and gold embossing, which emphasizes the packaging's exclusive design.

"We deliberately avoided the usual PE coating and instead used a sustainable coating that meets the strict hygiene regulations for direct food contact," explains Michele Tamburello, Key Account Manager at Karl Knauer. Despite the more complex processing, this packaging ensures that the cocoa specialties can be securely packed and shipped.

The new packaging comes in the form of small "treasure chests" and is stackable, making it practical and space-saving for shipping.

Wahrer Kakao - Was ist das eigentlich?

Real cocoa - what is that, actually?

There are stories that warm the heart, and then there are stories that take you on a journey. In my case, we are combining both into a heartwarming journey that ended in a discovery which turned my life (and not just mine) completely upside down: real, ceremonial cacao.

My name is Mischa – actually, my name is Michael, but I only reveal that when it’s strictly necessary. I was born in Ukraine, grew up in Germany, and eventually, through various detours, I ended up in Latin America.
